The group invaded Lake Amistad, Del Rio, Texas. This was the second trip of the 2001 summer.
The gang is still growing as 7 of us made this trip. The lake levels dropped 5 feet in the past
few months which hurt our campsite a bit. It made shoring the boats a challenge.
Due to the heat that we expected to encounter provisions were made for a pontoon boat to
offer shade in the middle of the day. This proved to be a wise decision. Temps topped 98
with no help from the clouds.
Some of the crew managed to get on the road rather early. We won't mention names. Lee and I followed and got to Del Rio Friday evening just in time for dinner at Cripple Creek. The staff remembered Fred from the April trip all too well. It seems he was quite the talk that night. For those that don't know the story ask me sometime. Anyway, dinner was good. You can't go to Del Rio without eating at Cripple Creek.
It was getting dark and we had to get back to the lake. Lee and I still needed to get the boat launched and move our stuff over to the campsite. In the meantime, Mike had lost his wallet and had to head back to the gas station to look for it. Luckily, got word on Sunday morning that someone had picked it up (all $$ still there!). Good news for Mike. In our infinate wisdom we loaded the boat without getting any lights out of the storage compartments. Of course, this is where we get lost in the dark looking for our canyon. It doesn't sound like alot but when the lake lowers 5 feet it can really screw up your navigation skills.
Saturday was a great day. The 2 bass boats headed out at sun up. The Randy/Lee team out fished
the Joe/Fred team. They thought quality... we were thinking quantity. Jay's crew stayed at the
campsite and started fixin' breakfast. That was some kinda breakfast. Eggs, potatoes, peppers,
and a beer. With all boats loaded we headed out of the canyon for the Devil's River.
The pontoon was "home base" with Capt. Jay at the helm. As usual we lost Joe for most of the day.
This was the first trip where we took food at the campsite seriously. Jay did us right.
He came prepared for this trip. Steak and taters over the campfire. How often do you get
that??
We're still trying to figure this one out. Maybe the Al C. Hol was starting to kick in.
The next trip is planned for sometime in October when it cools off. This will be a couples
trip. Anybody want to go? We are going all out on this one.
